Of Birthdays and The Internet

WWW model... cool huh?

As a kid, I never got to celebrate my birthday in school—wherein you treat the whole class with ice cream or spaghetti or whatever knick knacks you might be able to share. You know, those kiddy stuff back in the day. I was born nineteen years ago in May 1991.
My parents celebrated the day I came into this world. To them, May 1991 was going down to history. With my parents, the technological world also celebrated (no, not my birthday though I wish they did) something else, on the opposite side of the globe, something called WWW project was born. It's purpose was to facilitate the communication between high energy physicists. The first US server was located at Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory. This took place in the same month (however I’m not quite sure what day exactly).
Tracing down the history of the Internet, there had been a lot of episodes in 1991 that played a big part in the shaping of today’s Internet and the World Wide Web. According to these are some of the publicized highlights of the internet World. (1) One is that the Internet was made available to unrestricted commercial use. Commercial Internet eXchange (CIX) Association, Inc. formed by General Atomics (CERFnet), Performance Systems International, Inc. (PSInet), and UUNET Technologies, Inc. (AlterNet), as NSF lifts restrictions on the commercial use of the Net (March) (:glg:) Computers with Internet were nearing to a million. Wide Area Information Servers (WAIS), invented by Brewster Kahle, released by Thinking Machines Corporation (2) Linus Torvalds releases first version of the Linux Operating System kernel. (3) Microsoft released MS Dos 5.0. (4) Tim Burners Lee introduces the web browser.
It was the year wherein the access to the Internet became freer. Up to a million can already access it! And to think this is when WWW was born. Imagine life without the world wide web. Imagine… How in the world can we access information without WWW?
If it weren’t for the WWW, there would have been (if any) some other way of accessing the Internet, but if none, then in no way would we be able to access the internet. Every uses the www. Today to search the internet. It has connected the world in unaimaginable ways—from emails to chatrooms, to social networking sites the list goes on. It made us connect to each other all around the world—quick and easy. However, there are some pitfalls such as the threat to privacy and security.
Knowing these facts, I feel a little more significant, thanks to May 1991, WWW was born. Thanks to May 1991, we can access the internet fast and easy!
